101: Introduction to Pediatric Integrative Medicine

This course provides learners with evidence-based information on how, when and what types of integrative medicine therapies might be used in conjunction with conventional therapies to enhance pediatric care and to counsel families on more comprehensive treatment options. Strengths and challenges in the field are examined, the range of complementary therapies are introduced, and methods to evaluate safety and efficacy are explained and the relevance of integrative medicine to modern pediatric practice is discussed, using case examples to demonstrate its potential. Finally, policy updates and the current state of education in the field are covered along with a range of resources and references.

This course provides an introduction to the history and evolution of the field of pediatric integrative medicine; reviews core principles of the field; and explores reasons behind the growing demand for pediatric integrative medicine nationally and internationally. Patient cases are used to compare and contrast conventional, complementary, integrative, alternative, and functional approaches to help clarify nomenclature and to better understand the pros and cons of each treatment approach.
